Prior to 1926, there had been four small high schools in Bay County, one in Panama City, one in Millville, another one in St. Andrews and one in Lynn Haven. But due to the economic boom in the 20’s the leaders of Bay County decided to build a central high school located between Twelfth and Thirteenth Streets facing Harrison Avenue. The alma mater of the school begins “On the county’s northern border,” and indeed it was located far from the center of town at that time.  The building of red brick had cast classical details, and arched doorways and windows.  Spanish Colonial Revival was a popular architectural style in Florida at that time and the architect for Bay High adapted many Spanish elements for this building including a red tile roof and the arch surrounds on the far ends of the building.  Other elements were more classic such as the columns, central archway and baluster details on the façade.  The Bay County High School opened on September 13, 1926 and provided twelve classrooms along with an auditorium and school offices.  There was an outside wooden court for playing either basketball or tennis and a dirt field for the football games.   Subsequent additions were built onto the original brick building in the 50’s and 60’s including an enclosed gym, a library, a cafeteria and several classroom wings.  For the sake of modernization, the original building was torn down in 1976 and replaced by the building designed by the architectural firm of Smith, Bozarth, and Fuller.  However, the original brick building is the revered symbol of Bay High and is still remembered fondly by all who attended.
