The Cove Hotel, first known as the Hotel Cove, was built in 1925, by H. L. Sudduth who developed the entire Cove residential area plus numerous other sites in Bay County. Built in the Spanish Colonial Revival style that was so popular in Florida at that time, the hotel featured stucco archways, wrought iron details and pecky cypress ceilings. The hotel occupied a parcel of land with approximately a quarter mile of bay front beginning at the corner of East Beach Drive and Cherry Street. When it was first built it had fifty rooms and each had a private bath. In 1926, C.A. Nichols purchased the hotel and it was opened in May of that year. The hotel was located in a residential neighborhood and was surrounded by gardens and walkways. A diving platform was located behind the hotel as well as a wading pool that was formed from a small bayou. That provided a safe place for children to play in the water. The hotel was purchased in 1928 by Robert Sealy and Ruby Harris and became famous for its hospitality in regions far and near. Celebrities like Clark Gable and locals alike enjoyed the luncheons, dinners and teas that Ruby Harris presided over. It was a favored location of bridal functions and honeymoon couples. The property was purchased in the mid 1970’s by Hamilton Kenner who was planning on developing the open property on the corner of Cherry St. and East Beach Drive as the Cove Condominiums. After serving as the haunted house location for the local chapter of the Jaycees, the hotel burned in 1976 under mysterious circumstances that were blamed on electrical wiring. The site where the hotel was located is now a group of cedar-sided townhouses. Some of the original oaks and azaleas of the Cove Hotel can be seen along the street in front of those buildings on Cherry St.
